Voices of the Hill
This community documentary not only preserves the community’s history but also empowers the younger generation to take ownership of their heritage and its preservation.
Voices of the Hill is a feature length documentary that delves into the rich history of Twinsburg Heights, a predominantly Black suburban enclave located within the predominantly white city of Twinsburg, Ohio. Directed by Carla LynDale Bishop, director of AcroFutures, the film captures the essence of a community that has long been marginalized yet remains resilient and proud.
The documentary is structured around the voices of the youth who, under the guidance of Bishop, take on the role of historians, interviewing elders from their neighborhood. Through these interviews, the film reveals the origins, struggles, and triumphs of the residents, offering a nuanced and deeply personal view of life in Twinsburg Heights. The narrative not only preserves the community’s history but also empowers the younger generation to take ownership of their heritage and its preservation.
Voices of the Hill gained significant recognition, including screenings at prominent venues such as the Oscar-qualifying Cleveland International Film Festival, where it was shown to three sold-out theaters and was nominated for various awards. The film was also screened on Prime Video and various other festivals, venues, and screenings. Through this documentary, Bishop shines a light on a community that, despite being geographically and socially on the margins, has a vibrant story to tell, filled with lessons of resilience, unity, and the importance of remembering and honoring one’s roots.
